Since the 11th century, Burmese artisans have been producing magnificent lacquerware in the ancient city of Bagan, one of the archaeological and cultural wonders of Asia.

Craftsmen from northern Thailand, captured in war, were brought to Bagan by kings of Burma. There they have perfected one of the most unusual and decorative artforms in the region. Lacquer vessels became items of religious and even diplomatic importance, with the Burmese royalty sending lacquerware as tributes to the Chinese emperor.

Traditional-style, lacquerware is entirely hand-crafted made from bamboo strips, coiled together and covered in a dozen coats of lacquer. The astonishingly intricate and detailed designs are etched onto the surface of the bowl using a scalpel-like instrument. This technique allows patterns of detail that cannot be attained by using a paint brush. Superior quality lacquer items are a work of art and may take up to six months to make.

The offering bowl, called a hsun ok, exemplifies the exceptional craftsmanship that is traditional style Burmese lacquerware.
